" 3rd.?It might prevent the suppurative stage of the disease. "Of the 18 cases, 4 have died, 3 of these having been brought in a very bad state to the dispensary, and where I consider my opportunities for treatment were not good: the 4th case was treated for 4 or 5 days, and, when apparently well, the patient suddenly fell back without any premonitory symptoms, and died. The other 14 cases have, without exception, done remarkably well. Their general history may be summed up in the following: ? " The disease was in about its 4th or 5th day, aud there was either only a hardened condition or vesicular stage (but previous to suppuration) of the pock, with the usual accompanying febrile condition that more or less exists at this stage. " Upon the carbolic oil treatment being followed, by application thrice daily, the febrile symptoms that existed seemed extraordinarily to disappear, the pock was certainly stopped in its progress, the epidermis in one or two days?being the 10th of the disease? beginning to peal off the tops of the nodes, the nodes themselves flattening, no suppuration whatever being the result, and necessarily no secondary fever; the cases from the 2nd day of carbolic oil application might be considered as convalescent, and
